How often should we get our Chimney swept?

Whilst there has been a small reduction in nationwide chimney fires, there were still over 7,000 avoidable chimney fires in England in 2019 but most of these are preventable. Regular inspection and cleaning of chimney flues will help prevent fires within chimneys.

HETAS encourage having your chimney swept at least twice a year when burning wood or bituminous house coal and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels.

The best times to have your chimney swept is just before the start of the heating season and after your stove has not been used over a prolonged period.

If sweeping twice a year, the second time should be after the peak of the main heating season.

** ALWAYS USE A PROFESSIONAL SWEEP **

IN SUMMARY :

SMOKELESS FUEL : AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR

WOOD : QUARTERLY WHEN IN USE

BITUMINOUS COAL : TWICE A YEAR WHEN IN USE

OIL : ONCE A YEAR

GAS : ONCE A YEAR

You Asked, We Answered

How do I prepare for a visit from RME Chimney Sweeping?

We require a clear working area in front of the hearth, with any ornaments removed to a safe area. RME Chimney Sweeping maintains the highest standards of cleanliness, we use a three layer sheeting system to protect surrounding areas.

If parking is restricted at your property please advise us upon booking so we can discuss a way to unload our equipment and park safely.

Why should I get my chimney swept?

Chimneys allow dangerous gases to escape from your home, instead of them entering the room. Keeping them clean stops the build up of fly ash, soot and creosote. Birds nests can also severely block a chimney all of which contribute to the start of chimney fire.

RME Chimney Sweeping recommend you get your chimney swept after you've finished using it in late spring. As Autumn takes over Sweeps get extremely busy, which could mean a longer wait.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide is a very dangerous gas its highly poisonous, colourless and odourless. Any fuel that burns will create Carbon Monoxide gas. All appliances installed since October 2010 must have a Carbon Monoxide alarm installed in the same room. The main symptoms of Carbon Monoxide are headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.

We are able to supply and fit Carbon Monoxide alarms to current regulations.
